Buoyed by my progress on Super International Pajama Day, I finished up the second sock over the following week.

I knit these toe-up, using the Baudelaire heel. I really like the way it looks (and fits) just like a top-down heel flap!

The heel flap tends to be a little bit shallower than when I work them top-down. So after I finish turning the heel, I work about an inch of stockinette before starting in on the ribbing. That way the ribbing ends right above my heel, which helps keep the socks from creeping down in back.

Lisa asked if I had any pictures of top-down socks where I’d just used K2TOG all around on the toe:

hundertwasser

I’m pretty sure I did this on my Hundertwasser socks. But I can’t really tell. See what I mean? I wear hand-knit socks every day. Believe me, after they’ve been on your feet and stuffed into shoes for a few months, you’ll never know the difference.

Last week I washed all my socks. They hang from the ceiling (which is the floor of the loft) to dry near the wood stove. It’s getting to be a lot of socks!

So how come when I want heavyweight socks, all I have clean is lightweight socks, and vice versa?

Another Pajama Day Come And Gone

Super International Pajama Day is yet another way in which the blogosphere has enriched my life. When you work at home, and when you work as a freelancer, you’re kind of always working. SIPJDay reminds me how awesome it is to take an entire day to be selfish and unproductive and lazy.

The fact that it coincides with the most adorable sporting event of the year is just an added bonus!

I spent most of the day working on the Lorna’s Laces “Safari” socks. I made it from the toe increases almost to the heel turn. Very satisfying progress, if not the most gripping thing to blog about.

Last summer when I was decluttering and destashing because I couldn’t knit, I swore to myself that I would always have a pair of socks on the needles. I have way too much sock yarn. Seriously too much; about five years’ worth at my current knitting rate.

Last November I cast on for a pair of basic socks. I grabbed these two skeins of Lorna’s Laces kind of at random. I love the color, but man, that gauge? 8 stitches to the inch? Whoa.

I bought this yarn in 2007. I can tell because I found the posts about it, but if you click on them, they’re not there. (A huge chunk of the archives from 2007 went on walkabout a while back. Pretty upsetting, but there’s nothing I can do about it.)

These socks won’t be finished any time soon, but at least the first one’s done! I used the Tunisian Turkish cast-on, on a whim. I’m not sure if I did it right or not.

It sure was fiddly. I think I prefer my usual cast on, which uses the long tail cast on. You just hold the needles together and alternately cast on one stitch on needle 1, one stitch on needle 2, one stitch on needle 1, and so forth. Works great!

This unlikely sprawly spikey bit is the beginning of sock #2.

This sad, spidery-looking item is my new Sims 3 knitting.

Liz Lemon Hat

Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock in “Safari” on size 0 needles. This one’s going to take a while.

The last time I knit a pair of socks at 8 st/inch, I swore it would be a long time before I did that again. And I was right, because looking through the archives, I finished those in February 2007.
