Whoops, Forgot To Get A Picture

I finished my Red Scarf and took it to the post office Wednesday. Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture of it before I put it in the envelope. It looks just like it did in this post, only bigger.

I’ve been giving serious thought to Kelly’s suggestion of setting aside one month every year in which to do ALL the charity knitting. One of those lame knitting months like April or June.

There are so many great charities to knit for, but my charity knitting always seems to get bumped by other projects.

The Scarf Keeps Growing

You know, it’s a lot easier to crank out a scarf in Mistake Rib than in cable-every-row Crazy Town.

mistake rib scarf

Mistake Rib is a great stitch pattern for scarves. It’s easy for your fingers to memorize, doesn’t curl, and produces a thick squooshy fabric.

The idea with Mistake Rib is that you’re knitting K2P2 but accidentally left off a stitch at the end. Cast on a multiple of 4 stitches, plus 3. Then:

Every row: *knit 2, purl 2* knit 2, purl 1

In the case of the non-red Red Scarf, I cast on 33 stitches: 28 + 3, plus 2 more for a nice selvedge (edge).

Every row: Slip 1 purlwise wyif, *knit 2, purl 2* knit 2, purl 1, knit 1

Incidentally, for those of you playing Sims 3 and looking for a good deal on the World Adventures expansion pack: I did some window-shopping this morning and found the best deal through Amazon.com: $24.99 and eligible for free shipping
if you put at least one more cent’s worth of merchandise in your cart.

For some reason this page is being “hidden” in their search results. It took me a little while to find it, even though I knew exactly what I was looking for. World Adventures is being offered by a lot of different merchants, but the official “ships from and sold by Amazon.com” is the best deal.

Red Scarves Needed

Earlier this week, Norma announced that the Red Scarf Project is short of their goal by about 1,800 scarves. They need quality, unisex scarves, deadline December 15th.

I was planning to sit out Red Scarf Project 2009, since breaking my wrist last May played havoc with my knitting plans for the year. I’m still not quite up to full speed, and I have some stuff that needs to be done by Christmas. But when I heard the OFA was at less than 50% of their goal, I had to pitch in!

Considering the deadline, I knew this would have to be knit in worsted weight (i.e. quickly). I don’t have enough true worsted in my stash for an entire scarf. And I’m going to co-opt Ryan’s phrase and say I’ve been doing a lot of “recession knitting” lately.

Luckily I found a great deal on worsted weight yarn at Joann’s. They didn’t have red, but hopefully that’s alright. I figure if I can knit 6 inches per day, that’s only 10 days to a proper 60-inch scarf. At that rate it will be ready to mail by December 5th.
