As you might remember from my month of blogging in partnership with PurinaONE True Nature of Cats, one of the biggest changes that happened that month was switching Cinnamon to puzzle feeders.
I was prepared to transition gradually over to the puzzle feeder. I didn’t think she would like it. I thought she would find it annoying at best. But she took to it immediately.
She likes them because it is more interesting to eat food out of them. It’s the difference between eating a bowl full of casserole versus eating sushi. Sushi is just more fun!
I like them because they slow down her eating. After her years of living the semi-feral life before I took her in, her instinct is to gobble any food as quickly as possible, as soon as it appears. Unfortunately, then she turns around and throws it right back up. She never seemed to learn this lesson. (Cats.)
This used to happen 4-5 times a week. But since we switched to the feeders six months ago, there have only been one or two instances of vomiting after eating. My carpet is grateful.
PurinaONE sent me two feeders to try, and Cinnamon loved both of them. I switch them about once a month or so, to keep things interesting for her.
Feeder #2 is a Tiger Diner by Pioneer Pet. I like this one better because it’s easier to fill, you just dump the food in the top. But I think Cinnamon prefers the tube feeder.
I also tried making my own wheel-style feeder, but it made her really angry for no apparent reason. (Cats.)
This week I learned that PurinaONE has updated their site with more tutorials on how you can make your own puzzle feeders, video from their appearance at Maker Faire (I’m so jealous, I want to go to there) and more. If you have a kitty, check it out!
(Note: I see from that picture that I need to groom her. How embarrassing! Please excuse her shabby-looking coat. It’s my fault. I always groom her during a client call I have every Thursday morning. But this week the call was canceled, and I forgot her brushing.)
UPDATE: I brushed her, look how pretty!
Look how much fur came off. Look how annoyed she is. She enjoys being brushed for about 5 minutes and then she gets furious. There is no in-between.
