Anne asked people to show everyone a trip to their local shops, so here we go.

This is a quick local trip to take care of a few things. First, of course, I have to get gas. I fuel up at the Chevron station next to the Swinomish Casino. It’s on tribal land, so there’s no state sales tax, and gas is 10-30 cents cheaper per gallon than anywhere else.

Now that the car’s not sucking fumes, we double back southwards to La Conner, through empty fields steaming fog in the morning sun. (Picturesque!)

First stop, Pioneer Market to pick up a few odds and ends.

Pioneer Market is the only place I’ve found where you can buy the town newspaper. I’m sure there’s a paper box somewhere in town, but I haven’t yet found it. I try to remember to make a trip to the market once a week (the paper is published every Wednesday) so that I can keep up with local events.

As you can see, this week’s front page, above-the-fold news is:

1. A cow pie competition will be held soon. (You put down $5 on a square, and if the cow poops in your square, you win prizes.)

2. Someone broke into a woman’s car while she was parked downtown. Her iPod, laptop, jewelry, and favorite pair of jeans were stolen.

3. There are too many people moving to Pull & Be Damned road; the article’s author feels it is getting too crowded.

Good to know.

The running of errands continues with a trip to the bank on 1st street (one of the main streets downtown).

And of course, a stop by the post office. This week I was bad, and didn’t check my mail in the middle of the week. I have a smallish box, and I order a lot of stuff online, so today I was greeted with a “you have too much mail, please come to the front desk” note. Oops, sorry!

I dumped my armful of mail into the trunk of my car, then walked up the street to Gretchen’s Cafe Culture (109 E Commercial Street).

Cafe Culture serves coffee from Barbs Beans, and this week I happened to arrive just as Barb was dropping off the beans for the week. Barb buys huge 150lb bags of shade grown, organic green coffee beans, then roasts them to order, a pound at a time. Good stuff!

On the way back to the car, I like to wander along the channel side of the street, which is dotted with pocket parks.

The Swinomish Channel connects Padilla Bay and Skagit Bay. (Nice, isn’t it?)

Probably my favorite downtown landmark is the statue of the town dog, Dirty Biter.

Dirty Biter died in 1982, but his memory lives on.

This park also sports a treesweater (I know who knit it, but if I told you, I’d have to kill you). Unfortunately, I accidentally deleted the picture when I was making room for more pictures, later this weekend. (I have ordered a larger picture card, which should be here any day now…) Go, treesweaters, go!

  3. Surprisingly, with as close as I am, I haven’t made it over to LaConner yet. Now I *have* to go check out Dirty Biter Park soon.
