Speaking of photography!

You might have noticed my new photo background. It’s hella rustic, right?

It’s a pair of 50-year-old hand-cut cedar shakes that were taken off an old cow barn on Guemes Island. Some roofers dropped off a dump truck’s worth for free a few years ago. They were just going to take the shakes to the dump. They saved a lot of money by dropping them off here instead.

One of my summer projects is to pressure-wash the shakes, in preparation for re-using them as siding. It’s given me ample time to appreciate their weathered charm.

I feel like the cedar shakes are a little bit “much,” a little too contrived, a little too schmaltzy. But I’m getting a little tired of taking pictures on the white counter. They will do for now. At the very least, it’s fun to mix things up from time to time.

  • I think they look pretty spiffy, though I did worry about snagging your yarn on them…

Yeah, I know what you mean, I need to look for one that has just the right shade of silver, but without such big nail holes. (They all have nail holes, but some of them are less chunky than others.)
