Back in mid-July, I looked at my upcoming schedule and knew that things were going to be really freakin’ rough for a while. I pored over the calendar and decided that Labor Day, September 4th, would mark the end of the turbulence. By then, I would be moved into my (as yet unknown) new place, and my father’s wedding would be through (sadly, no time to see Yarn Harlot), and I could start putting the pieces of my life back together.

September 4th has come and gone, and my relief is palpable. Sure, there’s still a lot of work to do, but the worst of it is over. The rest of the year will probably be cake in comparison to the last six weeks. (Let’s hope so, anyway…)

The last five days are a blur, so I’ll just go through the pictures in the order they came off the camera.

Dulaan Yarn says “I laugh at your puny worsted weight!”

It’s hard to snap a WIP picture of this Dulaan sweater, because it knits up so freakin’ quickly you hardly have time to take a picture! This is sized for an 8 year old (more or less). Pictured: body up to the armpits (time: 3 hours), half a sleeve (time: 15 minutes). I had no idea that knitting at 2.5st/inch could be so satisfying!

Red Leader enjoys sitting outside, quietly contemplating nature.

Red Leader and Gold Leader nestle together and share an iced americano at Starbucks

Finally, the time has come to disassemble Red Leader and Gold Leader into skeins. I was a little sad to see them go, but they do pack better into their tub now that they’ve been broken apart. (FYI for those of you who also have giga-skeins, all you have to do is untie them in three places, and it will fall apart into 20 pre-tied skeins.)

Don’t you wish you’d been able to come over to Ryan’s house to get some Dulaan yarn? Aren’t you jealous of how quickly it knits up, and how much it will mean to one of the little Mongolian orphan street children? Don’t you just adore Gold Leader and Red Leader?

Then you, my friend, are in luck!

Post a comment, or email me directly (erika at mpire d0t com) before 8PM Friday Pacific Time to get your name in on the drawing. The winners will be chosen at random, and will receive enough gold and red yarn to knit a child’s size sweater. (Don’t be scared of the colors – think Harry Potter! Think oriental rugs! Think “the kid doesn’t care about the damn color, they’re just trying to survive another winter in Mongolia”!)

Remember, for tax purposes, the yarn MUST be used to knit for the Dulaan project. No cheating!

  3. The way that you keep referring to them as Red Leader and Gold Leader just makes me giggle, and the idea of knitting for Mongolian orphans is both noble and surreal.

  4. I can’t believe nobody is playing yet!

When I saw the yarn I thought immediately for gryffindor. I’ve been planning on doing some knitting for dulaan and I would love to try some of that yarn.

  5. I do hope the rest of the year will actually be cake-like for you…
Thanks for that chance to win some of that yarn! I was about to write something like “…severe budget restraint… can’t buy yarn at all these days… bla bla bla… even can’t really afford to pay for the postage for some of Ryan’s yarn… bla bla bla again… so that would be awesome”, but I’ll just say that it would really be awesome to have that opportunity to try my hand at a first sweater! Maybe even a first fair isle? (unless it is to make the sweater way too bulky). So, yeah, thanks for putting my name in the hat as well!

  7. rereading this post, I realise I made a comprehension error. Just as I was thinking that Erika has a nice chair, I see that the americano wasn’t From Starbucks, it is AT Starbucks! How fun and brave to take the Leaders on an excursion and photo shoot!

  8. I’m in. I’ve never done a sweater, perhaps the World’s Quickest Sweater ™ would be a good way to ease into it? In any case, I can while away the minutes by quoting Star wars, and the people around me will give me funny looks and back away.

  12. uh, don’t put my name in. I don’t knit. I think I am the only person who reads your blog and doesn’t knit. But I admire those who do…so I guess it is alright . I love the shots of red and gold. Maybe you should do a picture book called the Zen or Tao of Red leader. I just bought a book called “The Tao of Maggie” just a bunch of pics of a Bassett hound and little quotes.
