Sketch Wednesday: Rawr!

I kind of feel like this is cheating, since it’s a sketch for a project I’m developing for my other site. But I guess all’s fair in love, war, and blogging. Also, I had long since spent my lunch time drawing this by the time I remembered that today is Wednesday.

This is a Chinese unicorn. Or rather, an early/provisional draft of a Chinese unicorn.

I feel like this guy has it goin’ on, style-wise. But my attempt to render scales on his body is a flop. It looks like he’s wearing a fishnet body stocking. I also forgot to draw his mustache. So it’s back to the drawing board (kind of literally) for this fellow.

Related: if you had asked me a few years ago, I would have scoffed at the idea that I would one day spend this much time drawing unicorns. Like, how did my life get to the point where I draw unicorns on a daily basis?

Or a better question may be, why did it take so long for me to admit how much I like drawing unicorns? Because I seriously dig it. Whether I enjoy it ironically or not, I couldn’t even tell you. I just don’t know any more.

hey if drawing unicorns makes you happy, there is absolutely nothing wrong with drawing unicorns. be happy.

  • Your scales are no worse than the giraffe’s chevron design in the black-and-white illustration in wikipedia. That looks like a Merona/Mossimo/whatever design that Target pushed a year or so ago.

That’s so funny – I had exactly the same thought about the Missoni stuff!
