My Latest Venture

Like all the best projects, I kinda fell into this through a series of improbable coincidences. I have started a new “thing” I’m calling Squid And Wren Illustration, and selling hand-illustrated mugs on Etsy.

Squid and Wren Illustration

This probably seems a bit out of the blue from the outside. But it’s something I have been working on for about a month now. Sourcing materials, sketching out designs, making test mugs, that sort of thing. From my perspective, it’s a relief to finally be able to talk about it publicly.

Not to give away all my Trade Secrets, but he basics of it are, you can buy these awesome Sharpie-like markers. Use them to draw on porcelain things – mugs, plates, whatever. Bake the item for 30 minutes at 300 degrees, and the ink becomes permanent. Microwave-proof, dishwasher-proof, apparently even resistant to being scrubbed off with steel wool, although I haven’t tried that myself.

Now perhaps you can help me with a conundrum. I don’t know which side of the mug the design should appear on. What would you expect to see, in a mug like this?

(If you can’t see the poll, click here to view it directly.)

As always, all results are anonymous. And thank you to everyone in advance for your help!

Edit: The response has been so strong and obvious that this afternoon I made and posted three mugs with a design on both sides: a Sneaky Cat, a Newf, and a Silly Chicken.

    Count me as “Other, specify:”

I hold a mug with the handle in my right hand. The picture (kitteh!) should face me, with the punch line (“Ask me about the cute thing my cat did, because I’ll tell you anyway!”) facing out. Otherwise I read the punch line all the time; it becomes trite instead of funny.

On the demo mug … i’d like the cat to face me so the punch line is more subtle for the external viewer.

That is actually a really good point, about getting tired of the punch line! Thanks!

  • What won’t you get up to next?
I drink coffee with my right hand, unless I’m using the computer, in which case I drink with my left hand since my right hand is full of mouse. So, yeah, both sides sounds good to me.

Is this just coffee cups? Because I totally just made myself giggle imagining putting hens & chicks plants in a chicken-decorated pot.

If you end up drawing on both sides i think it’d be cute if there was a sneaky-cat face on one side (facing the right-handed drinker) and sneaky cat bum on the other, facing whoever is likely to bother said right-handed drinker before theyve finished their morning coffee :)

  • I love these! OMG holy cute! The sneaky kitty is too adorable and the dawg is so happy and the talents! For expressing things with lines! You have them!

  • What a great idea! I love love love them!

Thanks, I really appreciate how nice everyone has been, I am super anxious about this project, it’s hard to let your art just hang out there in public for all to see.
