That Worked Better Than I’d Have Hoped

The chicken tractor glowed in the darkness of 6AM.

And look what I found tonight!

It’s the first egg of 2011! Which means that it cost $14.99, since I just had to buy a bag of chicken feed last weekend.

  • What about lights and batteries ;)
Congrats on being a successful egg farmer!

  • You’ve inspired me! On Jan. 1st, I started keeping track of the number of eggs we collect and everything we spend. So far this year our eggs have cost us $1.76 each! Ha-ha! Well, we are stocked up on chicken food now so hopefully the average cost will go down until our next trip to the feed store. : )

  • Our chickens have started laying again, thank goodness. Our egg cost was running about a dollar an egg for a while there…

  • I seem to remember my mother — who raised chickens during the years from my adoption until I was 8, when she went back to teaching first grade — having some fancy-schmancy lighting setup in the chicken shed that adjusted the artificial indoor day length in order to induce greater egg-laying among her hens. Is that what you are doing?

Exactly! Except really cheap, and (of necessity) portable and battery-powered.

  • The price is coming down!
