I’m devoting this entire week to knitting Jayne hats to sell on eBay. Originally, I would only sell one or two a month – just enough to fund the purchase of yarn for my “real” projects. If only out of curiosity, I’m going to experiment and see how many hats I can knit and sell in a month. BUY THEM! Just kidding. Not really.
If you would like to knit your own, I’ve updated the pattern to make it much more pattern-like. It’s written for circular needles, but you can easily adapt it to be knit as a rectangle, then sew up the edge. Personally, I hate seaming so much that I actually purchased a pair of Addi Turbo circular needles specifically for knitting Jayne hats. The pattern is over there on the side bar, under Articles.
The Jayne Hats are pretty good deal, economics-wise. Eventually, someone official is going to catch on to this market, and they’ll start making official licensed Jayne Hats, and completely torpedo the market. Until then, I’ll keep knitting away with the ugly orange yarn.
I’ll tell you what isn’t a good deal, economics-wise: Dr. Who scarves. The official BBC pattern yields an 18 foot-long scarf, done entirely in garter stitch. They sell for about $80-$100. Now, maybe I’m just slow with garter stitch, but it takes me about two hours to knit a foot of garter stitch. That’s 36 hours to knit the scarf, which breaks down to about $2 an hour for labor. Factoring in the cost of the yarn, and it sounds like you’ll pretty much break even.
More science fiction characters need to start sporting charismatic, high-profile, hand-knit props. Given the choice between Jayne hats and Dr. Who scarves… yeah, I’ll take the ugly orange hat.
I won’t be posting any more pictures of completed Jayne hats. Suffice it to say, for me, each Jayne hat is no longer a beautiful and unique snowflake. Particularly since I firmed up the pattern – each hat is, more or less, identical. Just imagine endless pictures of Jayne hats atop my foam mannequin head, Bobby, and we’ll call it even.
