Stupid Chicken Tricks

I’m still plinking along on the Lava Cowl. I haven’t been able to knit much for the last week, because my wrist (the one I broke last year) aches with the weather. Which, despite being completely unscientific, is still a thing.

And so I present to you, Three Random Non-Knitting Items:

1. I taught my chicken to stand up when I shine a flashlight on her. Yay, chicken! Okay, it’s a trick I never claimed it was a good trick.

For the last month or so, Ethel (the one who’s molting) has been sleeping in the nesting box. It’s not the greatest habit, but I’ve given up trying to deter her.

Every night, I go out to collect the feed, move the chicken tractor, and check for any late-laid eggs. So every night I shine a flashlight on her, then rummage around under her belly.

She finally got the idea herself. It’s very obliging of her. Maybe tonight I’ll try to get video.

2. A nice sunset on my way home from errands.

3. I’m still feeling nostalgic for the millennium. And so I leave you with a sparkle kitten MySpace gif.

soft kitty, pretty kitty, little ball of fur!

  • I love the chicken trick! Our chicken, ever since she began molting, has been ostracized from the group by the “power chickens.” This makes me so sad! There is only one little meek chicken who will let her come by her. Will this pass, you think?

I have to laugh at your egg stats in the margin. Thanks for confirming what I have long been suspecting. ;)

  • That’s about as complex a trick as a chicken can handle. Nice pets, but not real bright…

I think it’s pretty much that, and Tic Tac Toe!

Oh and Lemony Renee, I notice that Ethel has been a lot more secretive since she started molting. I suspect it’s not that the others chase them out, but that the molting chicken is more… well, chicken. Apparently they do get moody and shy when they molt, since they can’t get away from predators as easily.

What a clever and accommodating chicken!

  • How long does it take a chicken to molt? She is such a smart girl!
