Whenever I run out of stuff to talk about, that seems like a good time to post a chicken update. Plus I had another ocular migraine this afternoon, and my brain is feeling too tender to be exercised any further than bok boks.
Over the last few weeks, they have been eating more and more and MORE. (Gayle says this is normal.)
You can see their feeder in the background, on the ground, with the green plastic base. It holds about a quart and a half of feed, and it used to be enough for the four of them (given that they get a fresh patch of lawn to eat every day).
A few days ago I finally gave into the inevitable, and added a second feeder. They are eating about one and a half of these a day. Impressive! Then again, they are also popping out an impressive amount of eggs. My take over the last 3 days has been 3.5 eggs per day.
Harriet, caught in mid-brGAWK. It’s not a delicate noise.

I’ve had exactly 2 occular migraines. They are not fun. My sympathies.
Your chickens are magnificent. And beautiful.
I get ocular migraines too. The first time I ever got one I thought my retina was detaching and totally freaked out.
I used to get oculars. Now I get the ones WITH pain. Wanna trade? Kidding. My first ocular was pretty scary: the whole left side of my visual field was … blank. Just not there. Not black, not bright, gone. I thought I was having a stroke. Scary!
I hope yours are painless and completely benign!
I’m always a sucker for chickie pics…
Love your girls!
Hey, thanks for the link to ocular migraines! Just went and read it – explains what was happening with my eyes a couple of times over the last few years. I had no idea what that was, but took solace in the fact that it went away…
I don’t know if this might help anyone out there, but I get ocular migraines too– Erika, I totally know what you mean by a tender brain! However, I had my eyes checked out and it turns out that I have drusen, which are little calcium accumulations in the eye. My eye doctor thought that maybe strong sunlight was being magnified or distorted in these drusen and was confusing my brain, so he suggested wearing extra dark sunglasses any time I’m in bright light. The ocular migraines have mostly gone away because of these… the doctor said I don’t have to wear the wrap-around (i.e. cataract-type) sunglasses, just extra dark ones. Maybe this will help other folks out there…?
Hooray for the chickens! And chicken blogging! (and sorry about your migrane…)
