The best thing about these Garter Stripe Beanies is picking through your collection of golf ball-sized yarn leftovers, deciding which colors to use for each beanie. I ended up grouping my leftovers and putting each group into its own gallon Ziploc bag, to help reduce the chaos.
The colors shuffle up in an interesting way on the “wrong” side of garter stitch.
Forgive the insipidity of this metaphor, but I think of it like people in different-colored shirts linking their arms together. You have person B, whose arms bracket those of person C on her left, and person A on her right.
Or put another way: A B A C B D C E D….
I also liked the way Mustaa Vilaa used a lot of white in her garter stripes. So I used white for every 4th stripe. Then it was just a matter of picking and choosing my colors. I like a little bit of repetition, so I tried to pick out 4-6 colors for each hat.
Today’s hat was from my bag of Neutrals. A lot of people like to choose bright splashy candy colors for newborn babies. But surely there must be some conservative, thoughtful babies, who prefer more muted tones?
I like to picture this charity hat’s recipient wearing a gray wool suit, and holding a little baby briefcase.

When that baby finishes reading the New Yorker, he’s going to pull out his stationery and write you a thank you letter!
