A little while back, I had a minor spazz attack on Twitter. I found a pattern for these great mittens, which are embroidered such that when you held them together in front of you, they formed the Ravelry logo.

Well that’s pretty awesome, obviously. But my mind instantly jumped to something even awesomer, which is John Constantine’s tattoos in the movie Constantine. (They aren’t in the Hellblazer comic book – only the movie. Sniff haughtily if you must, but as an old-time fan of the comic book, I really liked the movie.)

The obvious choice would be to make armwarmers. For that extra bit of verisimilitude when commanding the androgynous and morally-suspect angel Gabriel (Tilda Swinton) to appear.

But it turns out – I’m glad I discovered this before I started knitting – that my boobs are too big to bring my forearms together in front of me. I mean, kind of I can? But there’s a lot of squashing involved, and a certain inability to breathe.

constantine gloves

So I backed off that plan, and went with flip-top gloves instead. I chose Urban Necessity Gloves because I’ve been itching to make a pair ever since the pattern came out.

  1. I didn’t tweet this, because I am so private and all, but damn! I am glad to know SOMEONE with boobs bigger than mine.

Loved that angel – Tilda Swinton was brilliant!

  5. Heeeelarious!

Your boob comment took me back to high school and my inability to play volleyball the way the teacher and my fellow students did…holding your arms together in front of you so your (back) arms are touching wrist to your elbows? And I couldn’t do it cuz my boobs got in the way?

The not-as-big-as-me coach was not amused…

  7. Having a similar boob situation, I shared this post with my husband, who is also a long-term Constantine (comic book) fan. (Oh, remember when he got lung cancer??? That was so awesome)

Anyway, his suggestion was that you could knit a bra and embroider the symbol on the cups. (You know where I’m going with this, right?)

    Love your blog!

  8. My “front porch” is more the scale of a southern veranda than a stoop, so I feel your pain. Sometimes even crossing my arms over my chest gets complicated; above (and squash the girls), or below (and put someone’s eye out).

The Urban Necessity gloves look great. Unfortunately much of this winter has required full gloves layered under heavy mittens here in the Midwest. Freezing rain tonight, and 3-5 inches of snow by Saturday morning…
