Upon hearing that I had finished Liz Lemon’s hat, several people inquired about the status of Liz Lemon’s Scarf. Well, fair enough.

I decided that Jennifer was very perceptive. She pointed out that I had called it the “first repeat,” which presumes the existence of more repeats, correct? A fine and accurate point.

(I have heard that there are people who knit without the assistance of knitting blogs and knitting blog commenters. No idea how they do it.)

Liz Lemon Scarf

The end of the first repeat is the green zigzags at the far right. When I look at this picture, I see that I have been making some excellent progress. Which is a surprise, because it certainly doesn’t feel like it. Except for the way that it has been getting more and more difficult to cram into its project box.

Every morning I watch last night’s Daily Show and Colbert Report on Hulu, while I drink coffee and wait for the wood stove to warm the place up. I call this “my commute,” since I work from home.

I have been striving to knit at least one repeat during my commute. Just like I would if I were riding the bus. Which I’m sure sounds completely bizarre to non-knitters. But we knitters know that these funny little cognitive gymnastics are just par for the course with big projects.

Do you follow Sockington on Twitter? I adore Sockington. Ages ago he posted this update, which I saved to show you:

Sockington

Brady and Kimble have endorsed this sentiment. I went into this winter with the determination to be the Badass Queen of the Cold House, and I have succeeded.

So far I have used less than half as much wood as I had last year by this point. (I have a shitload* of firewood, but it’s just like money. Just because you have a lot, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be thrifty.)

For the last few months, they have been swinging between two modes:

1. Bristling, crouched, and glaring.

2. Sprawling, dozy, and stoned with heat.

Here’s Kimble in mode #2:

* The “ton” system is decimal. 10 craploads = 1 shitload. 10 shitloads= 1 fuckload.

  1. Well, I’ve lurked for quite some time watching your progress on the Liz Lemon scarf…congrats on that, btw! It’s looking grand! But what brought me from Lurktown was your “ton” system. I haven’t laughed so hard in a long time and I am sincerely glad that I didn’t have my mouth full of coffee as I read it!

  2. The ton system is fabulous. Perfectly fabulous. As is Sockington. And the scarf.

  3. But how much wood is in a shitton? :D

We couldn’t burn last year, because of a chimney problem that my husband didn’t take care of in time. Consequently, we still have all of last year’s wood left over, and we’re slowly burning it. I heart my woodstove. The animals don’t seem to mind the chill so far.

  4. Lord, but that’s funny. I laughed so hard. I’m going to share that one with my husband and dad. My parents had a wood furnace in their house when I was going up so they’ll appreciate your system of measurement.

  5. “Bristling, crouched, and glaring” seems pretty accurate. I remember being that way back in 2004 when I had no heat for almost 2 weeks (in November!) because something went wrong with my furnace and the first guy I hired to work on it turned out to be an idiot.

  6. I love how passive aggressive cats are. They just assume that everything is the HUMAN’s fault. Obviously we humans are barely sentient creatures, and cats only (resentingly, begrudgingly) relinquish their superiority to us because we have opposable thumbs and they don’t.

Have you ever heard the song “Meow” by Cheryl Wheeler? Great song. It’s the life philosphy of a cat in a nutshell.

Oh, and if the “ton” system is decimal, is it part of the metric system? And if so, what do us backwards non-conformist Americans use?

  8. I totally get the ‘commute’ knitting thing! Brilliant idea to have a commute time even if you work from home. I usually have a sock project that only gets knit on the streetcar. An inch per day (if I get a seat) they eventually get finished.

Glad you’ve got a shitload of wood. Stay warm!

  9. The scarf’s looking good! I got all chuffed seeing my name in a post. :)

I think your commute is quite reasonable. It’s a way to make a boundary for yourself. I find I can’t knit so well on my bus commute. I get motion-sick unless it’s very simple, and I can do it without looking.

  11. Sockington is related to my cat, I’m convinced of it.

The other random twitter feed I follow is Shitmydadsays. I can hardly wait to be a geezer. :)

BTW – I uploaded my Venture Household. My sims handle is Shi Whendi.

  12. majorly jealous of your commute. my partner works from home, damn her, and it’s very hard working to the bus stop knowing she can wear pjs all day.

  14. Ha! about the ton system. And Mr. Sockington. I like to keep the house nice and cool (definitely not cold), but my cat keeps nudging up the thermostat when I’m not looking. Cat or the husband, hard to tell.

  15. Hez is in full agreement w/Sockington.

The ‘getting too big for the project bag’ is a great indication of much progress! Looks as cheery as the original. (Which it *would* but whatever.)
