I bought a new bag of cat food yesterday – Natural Balance Original Ultra – love it, love the ingredients (all U.S.-sourced), love the nutrition, and the cats have always loved it as well.

I scooped a bit into their bowls last night without really thinking about it. This morning I awoke to very upset cats, hovering and crying and standing in front of my feet, as they always do when their bowl is empty. Except that both of their bowls were full.

“That’s odd,” I thought, as I made my way slowly across the room to make a pot of coffee.

“FEED ME RIGHT NOW I COMMAND IT,” Brady said.

“Please! I’m ever so hungry! I might dieeeeee!” Kimble said.

Once I’d set Mr. Coffee a’perkin’ I went back to the feeding station to try and sort this out. I scooped a handful of kibble out of the bag and gave it a good sniff. Ah yes, the mingled odor of chicken meal, chicken, brown rice, duck meal, and… diesel?

I sniffed it again. Definitely diesel, or – more likely – machine oil.

I’m sure the Natural Balance folks will want to hear a report of The Bad Bag. They have a 100% satisfaction guarantee, and they’re nice people, so I’m sure they’ll send me a refund or a coupon for more. I will buy more. (From a different lot number, though.)

That’s all well and good, but Natural Balance is only open M-F, and… what the hell am I going to feed my cats?

  2. At least they didn’t eat it! My greedy-guts cats would have eaten it and then been sick, ’cause they’ll eat anything. You have smarter cats than I do.

  3. That’s awful and scary. What about also reporting it to where you bought it? Does the bag itself smell like fuel, or just the food? That look on his face says it all.

  4. Success! I found an emergency can of cat food in the cupboard. Fed them that plus a small handful of Feline Greenies for breakfast. The cat equivalent of a McMuffin and a handful of M&Ms, but at least they have stopped crying.

Knitasha, it’s only the food that smells bad – the bag smells fine, and the exterior looks untouched. I’m pretty sure the food was contaminated on the line, and it’s not that fuel was spilled on the bag later.

  7. There are few things more desperate than a non-fed cat. What will you do for the rest of the weekend? Inquiring kittehs want to know.

  8. Your cats are indeed smart not to eat the bad cat food. I’ll be curious to see what you do for the rest of the weekend.

  10. Ah, yes, poor pathetic starving kitties.
Scramble them an egg or two? Order takeout from Red Lobster? Or Outback? (“No, no, no need to cook it. Thanks anyway.”)
Good luck. I’ve seen that look on my own cat’s face…

  11. That is not the face of a happy kitter-fuzz. I am sure you will make adequate provisions for the little darlings prior to Monday morning.

  12. Crisis averted! I found a bag of Iams on sale at the grocery store. (Because I don’t exactly have TWO 40lb bags of The Good Stuff in my budget right now.)

Just in time, too. By the time I got home, Kimble’s mew had gone faint and weak from hunger and desperation. Glad I took my cell phone with me, or I bet they would have phoned Animal Cops to file a report.

  13. Oh, do I empathize. We just figured out the girls’ favorite wet foods were causing all the vomiting and are going through the “What’s this stuff?” routine. This gets complicated by their affinity for some novelty, but just occasionally, and then distaste for what they loved as a single little can now that we have a half dozen larger ones.

  14. PS Do you actually get yours at a Natural Balance STORE? I just switched my girls to the Green Pea and Duck, but get it at Mud Bay.
