The hat was coming along nicely.
In fact, I was very nearly ready to cast off and finish it.
But two things kept bothering me.
One, I had screwed up the turning row between the brim and the body of the hat. You want to knit a row, so that the brim flips up just so. Well, I had purled that row, instead. Not a big deal, and (I dare say) not anything that anyone would ever notice, EVER.
Still.
Two, I had screwed up the decreases at the top. I thought how fetching it would be if the purl spaces between cables slowly disappeared, and the cables narrowed in towards each other.
But to do this, I simply decreased the purl stitches. Without a commensurate decreasing of the cables. With the result that the cables sort of fanned out and took over the top. Which is a look that I did not like at all.
So guess what.
Oh no you didn’t. Oh yes I did.

You did what you had to do. Coincidentally I am making an almost identical hat for #1 son for Christmas and am ready to knit the final half-dozen rows later today. But mine is sock yarn on US#2 needles and has a pattern to follow. The pattern has me decrease exactly the way you are going to — make the cables get narrower, make the purl columns disappear.
Love the Sims crib sheet!

Sometimes we need to make a fearless inventory and do what we need to do. I’m proud of you.
I had to do the same thing to a sock that was definitely going to be too small. I had the entire leg done, even though I knew after an inch or so, that it wasn’t going to fit. I told myself I would sell them on etsy if I couldn’t have them myself, but I love making socks for me and couldn’t do it.
Maybe we need to develop one of those plastic bracelets – Knit Strong.

Oh. my. goodness. Good for you, I don’t think I could have done it. In fact I gasped and my hand flew to my mouth just *seeing* it had been done.

Good girl. You knit a gauge swatch. And the prototype. Better what you want than wrong and driving you crazy!

It’s a freeing feeling for me. A reblanked slate…aaaah.
My mom gave up the knitting because of the frogging…not in her nature…must leave the room if she sees me doing anything more than going back a few stitches…

Hey, do what you gotta do! Half the fun of knitting is getting it just right, even if you have to frog it 8 times. The satisfaction is worth it!
