I spent most of yesterday playing The Sims 2, which requires no internet connection, and isn’t nearly as mind-numbing as watching cable TV all day. I decided to play a game I’ve seen floating around the internet, where you see how many generations of Sims you can raise from one family.
I created Aaron and Alice Alphabetti. They had twins (Bob and Baxter) who I raised to childhood. By tonight, I should have the third generation under wraps.
Actually, I just had a call with my aunt, who lives elsewhere in the county, so we have been comparing weather notes. Her suggestion is that I spend the day cleaning house, and I just might do that. Tricky to clean without running water, but hey, at least it will get me out of the computer chair.
Speaking of chairs. Plastic adirondack chair update:
Last night I slipped when I went out to get more firewood, and cracked the back of my head a good one. Hard enough to see stars, and my glasses flew off. According to the internet I should probably get a CT scan, but I can’t get to the hospital, so that’s not going to happen. Also, I’m not supposed to hit my head for the next week. (Duly noted.)
I didn’t lose consciousness, I’m not dizzy, and I remember stuff, so it can’t be that bad, but I have a headache and a stiff neck. I think I gave myself whiplash. Probably I shouldn’t have gone to bed without telling anyone about it, but as my dad dryly said when I mentioned this, “Well, that’s in the past now.”
Christmas is pretty much canceled this year. Depending on how the conditions swing tomorrow I might be able to get out, if we have a big thaw. But then it’s going to freeze overnight. It looks like it will be at least a week before things turn to normal.
Now where did I put that bottle of Murphy’s Oil Soap?
ETA I’ve just been informed that my Binary Hat pattern has been posted for sale on Patternfish!

Ereeeka! That’s scary stuff when you’re by yourself. Be reaaalllll careful with the headbone for awhile. I especially like the part about “don’t hit it again.” I coulda come up with that myself. Even in Shoreline the fake Adirondacks are piled very high. Wishing you the safest of Holidays. You have enough wood now right? RIGHT?
My very first Emergency Room visit was due to a boom hitting the back of my head (from a sailboat)…which they wrote down as “broom” and called the sheriff as it sounded like a domestic dispute…fun times, let me tell ya.
Anywho, got an impromptu lesson in self-diagnosing concussions. Check your eyes, are they dilated or bloodshot? Is there blood in your ears? (Do what they say not to and carefully clean them with a Q-tip if there’s no one there to look inside.)
Sleep sitting up. But if you’re not dizzy or nauseous, you should be okay.
Broom – too funny!
I don’t feel dizzy, but I’ve been feeling nauseous for the last few days. Probably because I’ve been on weather-related house arrest for nearly a week.
I checked with a Q-tip – no blood, yay!
Lunch today is 3 pieces of bacon, and red potato home fries cooked in the bacon grease. It’s disgusting and unhealthy but soooooo good. I think I deserve that much.
At least that much. Disgusting and unhealthy? Delicious and hearty. So there.
Yes, please plan on not knocking yourself senseless again this week.
Scary but to my completely uneducated medical ears, you sound okay. Time will tell…….if you feel the cats gnawing on you, the snow hasn’t melted and you might be in trouble.
Congratulations on the pattern and on the return of all the utilities.
Take good care of yourself. It sounds like things will not thaw by Christmas as they’re predicting highs of mid-30s in the city. I assume they’ll be lower out there in the hinterlands. You need hearty food to keep warm.
I also assume it’s not reasonable to walk out somewhere and have someone pick you up to take you to Christmas. Besides, cats can’t be left on their own for long in this kind of weather.
Enjoy as best you can. It’ll make good stories for years to come. Now everyone can finally stop talking about the year they had to bbq the turkey for Thanksgiving. It’ll be trumped by the Christmas that didn’t happen.
KarenJo, I literally LOL’d at that, and I never literally LOL.
Yes, I had the same thought earlier today – “well, at least everyone will be able to quit talking about the time they had to finish the Thanksgiving turkey on the bbq grill”!!!
I think your head is fine. You live in the middle of nowhere and drive a Saab, obviously your headbone is thicker than most.
You mention trying to clean without running water, but your entry states that running water is a go, so I’m not sure which is it?
I have never played the sims and will not get sucked in, no matter how much you post about it!
Glad you have internet back. I can live at home for a long time with power and internet.
Err, sorry about that! Running water is a “no.”
This is where I’d make a head injury joke, if I wanted to be really tasteless.
I do not think running water is required to vacuum up the cat hair, but what do I know? I’m the one (with two dogs and two cats) who hadn’t vacuumed for nearly three months.
I agree that your head is probably okay, but I was very worried about you for a couple seconds there. Injuring oneself when snowed in is no joke. Take care, and don’t bludgeon yourself again, ‘kay?
