Fresh new sketchbook!

Those of you who know me, know that I’m a cheap motherfucker. I wear my clothes until they fall off my body, I add water to the Windex when I start running low, and dammit, I draw on every inch of my sketchbook before I buy a new one.

Phase 1 of sketchbook usage is to cheerfully sketch away on the right-hand page until I hit the end. Phase 2 is to go back through the sketchbook, looking for the backs of pages that I can draw on. (I can’t draw on the backs of pages that have been watercolored, because the paper is too wrinkly.) Last night I found myself at phase 3: I looked through the book until I found something I was willing to erase, erased it, then drew the fireplace in its place.

Okay, that’s too damned cheap, even for ME. It’s not like I erased a great work of art – actually, it was just a test doodle of a rectangular solid in perspective. But still, it’s the principle of the thing, you understand.

So tonight I went to the office supply store and bought a brand-new sketchbook. Goodbye, old sketchbook with cover bearing Hello Kitty sticker from a box of candy and Sammy Slug sticker from the Redmond library! RIP, 7/2004 – 11/2004.

The first thing I did with my new sketchbook was the first thing I do with all new sketchbooks – write a note with my contact information on the first page. (“This sketchbook means a lot to me. If found, please email [me] for pickup, or return to [my address].”) Sketchbooks do get lost, but if you put your info inside the cover, most people are decent enough to get them back to you.
